Howdy there – it’s harrybbbb and I like holding virtual book readings. I am posting up a passage from my SMB Consulting Best Practices book wherein I yak about good and bad areas for consultants to consider pursuing. The point is we must all be razor sharp and selective these days!
Areas to avoid
Old hands in business will tell you, that in the long run, you are successful just by avoiding mistakes. Same thing for SMB consultants: Just avoid the mistakes and you can’t help but win. In the case of technology, that would include avoiding technology solutions that have lost the hearts and minds of the IT community. The list is long and includes IBM’s OS/2 operating system, certain releases of Novell NetWare, the really old C/PM operating system (now I’m really dating myself), and so on.
Areas to focus on
Some SMB consultants niche by specific areas. You’re currently seeing successful SMB consultants focus on the medical practice area because of the HIPPA compliance regulations (this is in the US). Other SMB consultants focus on law practices. I discuss niching by business area more in the Grinder section of this book.
