70-282 Exam Cram: Volumes and Permissions

Hiya folks – I am the publihser of the Microsoft Small Business Specialist Primer and I like to hold virtual book readings – so here you go:

Permissions and Volumes

Another testing area to pop up here and there on a Microsoft exam involves moving or copying files and folders on and in between NTFS volumes. Be aware how copying and moving files or folders can affect the original permissions, as seen in Table 6-3:

Table 6-3

Actions affect permissions.

Within NTFS volume

Between NTFS volume

Inherits permission of the destination folder

Inherits permissions of the destination folder

Retains original permissions

Inherits permissions of the of the destination folder

Users who copy files or folders become owners of the new copies

It’s easy to remember if you think of that a copy is just like a cut & paste operation. It physically moves the location of the files to the new destination, regardless if it is on the same volume or another volume. Whereas a move on the same volume will only repoint the file location, but not physically move the file. If moving to another volume, it will.
