Home-based vs. rented office space
A quasi-distribution issue is where you’ll physically locate your practice. Home-based certainly makes sense early on for convenience and to keep expenses down. In the “Volatility” section, I cite a USA Today article that reiterates this point. Rented office space makes more sense when you’re a
true-blue company with inbound customers and you need the professionalism a real office brings. But, of course, rented office space comes at a price: rent!
A twist on this debate is the office in the car concept. Perhaps your true distribution vehicle is a “vehicle,” such as an automobile. Think about it. Often SMB consulting is nothing more than driving from client site to client site. Given that, perhaps a permanent office doesn’t make as much sense.
