3rd Party Apps and the 70-282 Exam [Microsoft Small Business Specialist Primer book excerpt]

Hey there – I am the publisher of this 70-282 exam prep book and I thought you might like today’s virtual book reading session. It’s a passage on 3rd party apps!

Make sure to examine existing technologies before acquiring and deploying workstation and server utilities, base applications, infrastructure services, network connectivity components, and platforms. To be honest, you can find this out by joining some of the public newsgroups and posting a question about utility compatibility. See Appendix A for a list of these types of SBS resources.

Third-Party Applications

SBS 2003 provides a stable and secure infrastructure to run small business applications, such as an accounting system or industry-vertical specific application. Before purchasing a third-party application, ensure that you have enough disk space and check for application compatibility and any application dependencies. If you have a specialized third-party line-of-business application (LOB), you may opt for getting a second server and using Terminal Services in application sharing mode, which will then be solely dedicated to the LOB application.

IMPORTANT: One thing you WILL NOT find on the 70-282 exam is direct references to specific third-party backup solutions, utilities, and applications. Back in Redmond, Microsoft Legal would never allow it (trust us on this one). So with our third-party mentions above, we’ve gone further than the scope of the 70-282 exam, which we are trying really hard to stay focused on in this book. But for the 70-282 exam, you’d need to have on your “radar screen” the conceptual and planning issues surrounding third-party applications and utilities.
