70-282 Exam – the “client computer” information you need to know [Microsoft Response Point Primer book excerpt]

Boo! It’s Halloween and I am just tryin’ to scare ya!

Anyways – today’s post is my virtual book reading – where I post up a passage a day of the book I published! All about having you pass the 70-282 exam!

Client Computers: You want a client system whose hardware supports fast connectivity and performs well on the Small Business Server 2003 network. Consider the key components: processor, memory, hard drive and CD-ROM/ DVD-ROM, and NIC card; and get the best money can buy. The 70-282 exam is based on Windows XP Professional as the recommended choice for the client operating system. Minimum hardware requirements are as follows:

Table 3-2

Minimum Windows XP hardware requirements

Requirement

Minimum

Recommended

Processor

233 MHz

1 GHz or faster

RAM

128 MB

256 MB or higher

Hard Drive

4 GB

40 GB

NIC

10/100 Mbps

x10/100 Mbps

Laptops: Most laptops come with built-in wireless cards. You want to make sure they are equipped with a card that is compatible with the wireless access point you plan to use.

Mobile Devices: SBS 2003 has special features included to ensure that mobile devices—like smart phones and pocket PCs—can take advantage of the remote access features such as accessing your e-mail and schedule. For more information on mobile devices, see Chapter 7, “Configuring Windows Small Business Server 2003.”

Second Servers: Depending upon the purpose of your second server, you will need to consider the type of hardware it will require, as it represents a completely separate undertaking from your Windows Small Business Server 2003 server. Also, your second server will need to use a Windows Server 2003 operating system edition other than Windows Small Business Server 2003, such as Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition, since you can only have one Windows Small Business Server 2003 server running in a network. The second server will require one CAL (Client Access License) to access the Small Business Server.
